The northern and central sections of District 55 have seen a sharp rise in criminal activity in recent years following a trend of rising crime throughout the city of Atlanta. I too have been a victim of this spike in crime as my vehicle was recently vandalized and burglarized.
I believe we need increased law enforcement presence but I wholeheartedly believe those law enforcement officers are in dire need of adequate training outside of life-ending tactics.
Further, I believe that not all calls which are sent out to police need to be handled by police. I believe some of those calls should have the response of behavioral health technicians. We would seem to establish a state response task force to analyze and respond appropriately to such calls.
I believe if we continue to punish without a sustainable release plan we are only creating more sophisticated criminals. Therefore, as your representative, I will author legislation that not only hands out punishment for criminal activity but establishes a system of true rehabilitation coupled with resources for those being released back into society.
